Countless subcultures have come and gone because the style got old, re-purposed and sold back to the community it originated from. The one subculture that is the most notable is hip hop. In its entirety it has transcended race, wealth, borders and much more.

Hip hop is a culture of style, a constant forward moving machine that continually checks itself out in the mirror and asks, "am i relevant" and "am i cool". By bombarding itself with constant criticism and self analysis hip hop grows by its own accord, unrelenting, unashamed.

This my friend is dedicated to someone who has incorporated style into their lives and honed it to perfection. His style is so complex that when he starts camouflaging it and shit ain't no body gonna be able to read it.

That is ?mark

My Jeru Record

Well i can't find my jeru record "the sun rises in the east" its probably the record that got me into hip hop. I've been looking for it for 2 hours. I was thinking of putting together a hip hop set, but now i just don't know. I'm perplexed, where could it be. Lost in the vast oasis that is my collection. Luckily i found everything else i was looking for, even my scienz of life record. Which Mf Doom is on before he was all "that". He still rocks it out. I remember buying that record in NYC at towers, it was so cold and empty up those stairs in a huge attic like room, no ventilation. The only company was the dust collecting on your finger tips as your leafed through crate after crate. In most cases this means there's are a slew of copy cat bands bashing relentlessly on their guitars and screaming into mics about their teen angst issues. Hopefully you come across something different, most of the time you don't and are left with a void of hope that you can only fill with another 4 hour long session of guitar hero.

This year however aside from the cacophony of indie guitar there was a iconic presence in the world of hip-hop. KRS-ONE. This man or should i say legend single handedly broke down the entire hip-hop history and industry in bite size pieces in an hour. Beginning with the arrival of Kool Herc in the Bronx up to the present state of the culture. Illuminating thoughts on Martin Luther King's "I have a dream..." speech told us that this luminary was not talking to the people of his time but to "us" to a culture that transcended race and language barriers to form a universal culture, hip-hop. Omni-Culture. A culture that said "fuck you" to a society that was about integration and conformity. A culture that challenged the norms and pixelated the world to extract the micro-elements it used to power a vehicle of such momentum that every time it crashes the pieces create sub-cultures of hip-hop.

As an artist KRS spoke about the revolution being over, but more so that it is now televised as Gil-Scott once predicted. Now the more authentic you are the more the mainstream wants you, the more you say "screw the system" and "I do this for the love not the money" the more the system will embrace you and corporations will throw money at you. This is the age of reality tv, realness is given the value it never had before. Once you have authenticity you achieve credible status and so you continue to rise up and gain respect and on it goes.

Krs talked about how you must acknowledge your peers and big them up. This gives them value and so the more value you give your friends the more you are surrounded by value, which then makes you valuable. There is much more that was discussed by this teacher, philosopher, hip-hop historian, etc.. This man is extremely articulate, honest and epitomizes what hip-hop is and should be. I only wish the median age at his speech was not 25 but younger as more young kids need to understand true hip-hop.

Kode 9 rmx Mf doom

It seems whenever i get into a discussion about dubstep with fellow dj's and producers the main point made is the freedom dubstep allows the producer to have. Dubstep is such a new form of music that there are no strict guidlines to the genre. In fact dubstep as a music style is all over the map, being played in techno, downtempo, crunk, mashup and many other kinds of dj sets. Such is also the case with hip hop. Hip hop has usually borrowed, stole and manipulated the sounds of various genres. So its no surprise that kode 9, a staple in the dubstep scene has gone ahead and remixed the prolific underground hip hop genius Mf doom. The result is a crunkish beat with punchy synth hits and a bassline that rolls in and out of the mix. A lingering pad sound in the background gels the synth and beats together while not dominating the mix. Doom's voice meanders through the track as almost another bassline, deep and resonating; the track takes on an epic feel. Not club banger, not dowtempo, this track will surely find its way into the sets of dj's as a segway track from hip hop to dubstep, or however they chose. Don't forget to check out the other tracks on this 3 track release from Ghostly records, they all have something to say.

For more info, a sample and to purchase the vinyl (a digital release is in the works) go here
http://www.ghostly.com/1.0/ghostly/gi63.shtml

A track or 2

I'm in the process of trying to be less of an arse, since i know none of the art i produce will completely and utterly justify my existence. This has been an ongoing battle to refrain from attempting to make really aggressive bass tracks that blow peoples minds. I do not have a predisposition to make party anthems. The tendency is to go a route of the experimental where being unsure of the outcome is part of the tracks on perpetual energy that it takes on. A song is more than a composition its a statement on how you were feeling and what was preoccupying you that gave you the motivation to create these sounds. Of course this all may sound flaky, in some way maybe it is. I have no point at all to this its really just a means to begin a dialog that i have been procrastinating for some time. This may be about as personal as this blog gets as i hope to begin a more music oriented theme for this blog.

days of our lives
vocal choppage- coi
synth destrucion- nykwil
production-coi & nykwil

Dubslingers on Prophecy

Don't forget we have a new mp3 of dubslingers on prophecy. I've never written a script before, but what i've found to be the most difficult part is the dialogue. Actually writing the way people talk is not an easy task. Amoung this mountain of a learning curve i've managed to isolate myself to my basement where i have begun an onslaught on everything electronic. This means circuit bending everything i can, well not everything. I have not touched the dx-7 which was lent to me under specific rules that i could not open it up. My friend Robb had brought over an sk-1 last week and we bent the shit outa that. Well back to the script at hand.
