C.O.I.

Seeking a bass existence

C.O.I. is a culture enthusiast who maintains sanity through the production of art. By no specific defintion of the term "art", C.O.I. wishes to expand his understanding of expression and further the exploration of "cool." A music lover first he began his descent into music because of his father. Jazz music has always been his first love but a chance encounter with a "raver" lead to his expansion into electronic music. Now an avid circuit bender, C.O.I. enjoys all things broken, broken to a point of sound destruction. From noise-core to jazz C.O.I.'s musical tastes vary immensely. Expect to hear this in his sets which are never genre specific.

Founder of Brokenbeat.ca in 2000 C.O.I. is on a mission to break as much shit as possible and uses those pieces to create fresh culture that do not rely on current archetypes. The main one being that brokenbeat.ca has nothing whatsoever to do with broken beat music. Brokenbeat.ca is going to re-appropriate the term and use it the way it was meant. Our philosophy is to break the cultural norms that society has created in its wake of consumer culture. We are dedicated and hard working and we will not stop. Ok not that hard working, but we're working on it.

Evolution of style

In every art form the most sought after element is individual style. Countless subcultures have come and gone because the style got old, re-purposed and sold back to the community it originated from. The one subculture that is the most notable is hip hop. In its entirety it has transcended race, wealth, borders and much more.

Hip hop is a culture of style, a constant forward moving machine that continually checks itself out in the mirror and asks, "am i relevant" and "am i cool". By bombarding itself with constant criticism and self analysis hip hop grows by its own accord, unrelenting, unashamed.

This my friend is dedicated to someone who has incorporated style into their lives and honed it to perfection. His style is so complex that when he starts camouflaging it and shit ain't no body gonna be able to read it.

My Jeru Record

Well i can't find my jeru record "the sun rises in the east" its probably the record that got me into hip hop. I've been looking for it for 2 hours. I was thinking of putting together a hip hop set, but now i just don't know. I'm perplexed, where could it be. Lost in the vast oasis that is my collection. Luckily i found everything else i was looking for, even my scienz of life record. Which Mf Doom is on before he was all "that". He still rocks it out. I remember buying that record in NYC at towers, it was so cold and empty up those stairs in a huge attic like room, no ventilation. The only company was the dust collecting on your finger tips as your leafed through crate after crate. Damn i really need to go diggin soon.

Drunken set

I got hit by a car on Halloween. I came home hurt and drunk so i made this mix in ableton. My nose is broken...and this mix is what i have to show for it. Enjoy. And i think cars should have detectors that can sense when a pedestrian is crossing the street and prevent them from getting hit.

I was feeling a little gangsta after the hit that i played some of the new E-dubb.

KRS-ONE -Authenticity and Credibility

As some of you may know, come march CMW (canadian music week) touches down in the city and many bands from all over Canada and the world put forth their best foot to get some label recognition. In most cases this means there's are a slew of copy cat bands bashing relentlessly on their guitars and screaming into mics about their teen angst issues. Hopefully you come across something different, most of the time you don't and are left with a void of hope that you can only fill with another 4 hour long session of guitar hero.

This year however aside from the cacophony of indie guitar there was a iconic presence in the world of hip-hop. KRS-ONE. This man or should i say legend single handedly broke down the entire hip-hop history and industry in bite size pieces in an hour. Beginning with the arrival of Kool Herc in the Bronx up to the present state of the culture. Illuminating thoughts on Martin Luther King's "I have a dream..." speech told us that this luminary was not talking to the people of his time but to "us" to a culture that transcended race and language barriers to form a universal culture, hip-hop. Omni-Culture. A culture that said "fuck you" to a society that was about integration and conformity. A culture that challenged the norms and pixelated the world to extract the micro-elements it used to power a vehicle of such momentum that every time it crashes the pieces create sub-cultures of hip-hop.

As an artist KRS spoke about the revolution being over, but more so that it is now televised as Gil-Scott once predicted. Now the more authentic you are the more the mainstream wants you, the more you say "screw the system" and "I do this for the love not the money" the more the system will embrace you and corporations will throw money at you. This is the age of reality tv, realness is given the value it never had before. Once you have authenticity you achieve credible status and so you continue to rise up and gain respect and on it goes.

Krs talked about how you must acknowledge your peers and big them up. This gives them value and so the more value you give your friends the more you are surrounded by value, which then makes you valuable. There is much more that was discussed by this teacher, philosopher, hip-hop historian, etc.. This man is extremely articulate, honest and epitomizes what hip-hop is and should be. I only wish the median age at his speech was not 25 but younger as more young kids need to understand true hip-hop.
